Patterns for Living

What is your daily pattern?
How do you go about your day?
Do you decide how to feel based on the weather?
Do you wake up on one side of the bed or the other?
What is the foundation for all occasions in your life?

First of all, to be able to establish a good pattern for living, one must be saved.  Accepting the finished work of the cross by faith and receiving Jesus Christ into your heart begins a right relationship with the truth of the word of God.  Then you have the power to establish good patterns for living.

Romans 10:17
"So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God."

Second, after salvation comes the ever on going process of edification and application in one's life.

I Timothy 4:8b
"...but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."

I.  If you want to be distressed, look within.
          A.  Jeremiah 17:9  "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked' who can know it?
          B.  Philippians 4:8  "Finally, bretheren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report: if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
THIS IS A GOOD PATTERN FOR LIVING - STEWARDSHIP OF OUR MIND.

II.  If you want to be defeated, look back.
          A.  Luke 9:62  "And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kindom of God."
          B.  Philippians 3:13  "...forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching froth unto those things which are before,..."
THIS IS A GOOD PATTERN FOR LIVING - STEWARDSHIP OF OUR ACTIONS.

III.  If you want to be distracted, look around.
          A.  II Timothy 2:4  "No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to ve a soldier."
          B.  II Corinthians 4:18  "While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
THIS IS A GOOD PATTERN FOR LIVING - STEWARDSHIP OF OUR FOCUS.

IV.  If you want to be dismayed, look before.
          A.  Acts 1:7 "And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, ..."
          B.  Psalm 37:5-7  "Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.  And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgement as the noonday.  Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently on him ..."
THIS IS A GOOD PATTERN FOR LIVING - STEWARDSHIP OF OUR TRUST.

V.  If you want to be delivered, look to Christ.  Proverbs 28:13  "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
THIS IS A GOOD PATTERN FOR LIVING - STEWARDSHIP OF OUR FORGIVENESS.

VI.  If you want to be delighted, look up!  Hebrews 12:2  "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith: who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

How Does Your Garden Grow?
Genesis 2: 8,9,10, & 15

"And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.  And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In our lifetime we plant many gardens.  Whether wittingly or unwittingly, we sow a multitude of seeds on a daily basis.  Seeds unto others and seeds unto ourselves fall to the earth of each of our lives.  Some of us are very young, some middle-aged, some older, and some… older than that!  Some of us are eager to “begin our lives”, some of us are in the midst of our lives.  Some of us are living with our parents still, some out on our own, some with spouses and some single, some even beyond that and living out our years with our spouses gone on as well as others of our family and many of our friends.  In the course of the years of our lives we will have planted and reaped many gardens.
By the time we can walk and talk we begin to realize that we are able to reap fruit from what we sow.  Some of that fruit we like and some of it we do not.  Soon, in the flesh, we learn to manipulate as many of our circumstances as we are able in hopes of seeing the desired results.
In the Word of God we learn the principles of sowing and reaping.  Galatians 6:7 & 8 tells us, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.  For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”  Don’t be deceived, know the peril and know the promise of sowing and reaping.
Sowing and reaping the fruit of the seeds we plant must have a plan, a purpose, a pattern and priorities.  God has that master plan for the gardens we sow.  Lets look at His example of the perfect garden and let’s see how the First Lady of the Bible did in God’s garden of perfection.
The Garden of Eden
God’s Plan for the Garden of Eden was to make it beautiful.
1.    God planted it – established it with a specific design.
We should design our garden with premeditation, thought.
(Pr 31:16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.)   Make plans on purpose!!  Purpose in your heart to have God in mind as you sow seeds… in the heart and the mind of others and yourself!
2.    God made it to grow – gave it rich, full, abundant life.
We should design our garden so that we give it life.
(Ps 119:159 Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness.)  Grow our hearts and others’ with the Bible, the living words of God.
3.    God made it pleasant to the sight – to be delighted in greatly.
We should design our garden to be pleasant to the sight.
(Ps 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.)  Pleasure comes from orderliness, orderliness comes from following God’s Word.
4.    God made it good for food – pleasant, wonderful sustenance.
We should design our garden to be food for the soul.
(Ps 119:130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.)  Supporting our husbands, teaching our children, encouraging our friends needs to be done from God’s words.
5.    God put the Tree of Life, and the Tree of Knowledge of
Good and Evil in it – God’s treasures of life and knowledge.  Design your garden around the treasures of God.  (Pr 15:6 In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.  Matt 6:20  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:)
6.    God watered His garden by a river flowing out of Eden – continual refreshing.  Design your garden to be well watered.  (Pr 11:25 The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.)  Living water, healing water, cleansing water ( John 4 and Eph 5).
God’s Purpose for the Garden of Eden was to make it a place of pleasure.
1.    His purpose was for Adam to live in a place of pleasure (Gen 2:15) – he took Adam there.  We should make our garden a place of pleasure. (Ps 147:11 The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.)   Live in the fear of the Lord and hope in his mercy.
2.    His purpose was for Adam to serve God in a place of pleasure – dress it.  We should make our garden a place of service.  (Ps 101:6 Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.)  Service is not always doing, but, also living a faithful walk in a perfect way!
3.    His purpose was for Adam to guard that place of pleasure – keep it.  We should make our garden a place that is guarded.  (Ps 106:3 Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.)  Keeping judgment and doing righteousness brings the blessing of God.
4.    His purpose was for Adam and his family to live in obedience to God in a place of pleasure.
    a.    God gave Adam instructions. (Gen 2:16 & 17a)
    b.    God gave Adam warning .  (Gen 2:17b)
    c.    God gave Adam a help meet to his needs.  (Gen 2:19-22)
    We should make our garden a place of obedience.
     a.    Accept God’s instructions –by accepting the Sun of Righteousness, Jesus Christ as your Saviour
     b.    Accept God’s warnings – by accepting the living word of God to Water your life.
     c.    Accept God’s help – by accepting the power of the Holy Spirit to live your life.
God’s Pattern for the Garden was to give order and bring glory to himself and happiness to Adam and his family.
1.    God – God is first above all in God’s order
2.    Man – God set man over the woman
3.    Woman – God gave woman to the man
4.    Creation – God gave man dominion
God’s pattern should be our Priority for our garden!
The First Lady of the Bible was Eve!
1.    She was the first Woman – created in a perfect environment.
2.    She was the first Wife – created as the perfect help to Adam.
3.    She was the first Mother – responsible, with Adam, to teach.
4.    She was the first Deceived – by not guarding God’s words.
5.    She was the first to Commit Sin – by following the flesh.
Her Plan was to follow her God.
Her Purpose was to glorify her God.
Her Pattern was broken by sin.
  God’s Plan             Being First              Best of Circumstances
+God’s Purpose     +Being Best            +Best of Intentions
+God’s Pattern       +Being in Charge    +Best of Education
God’s Blessings!     Being Deceived        Best of the World
The First Lady of the Bible sought to have that which seemed to be desirable.  Don’t be fooled.  “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.  For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”  (Galatians 6:7&8)  Sow the seeds of truth and wisdom.  Sow the seeds of salvation and obedience.  Reap the fruits of righteousness in your garden and in the lives of those you love.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~OR~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I.  Am I being kind to tell this information? (loving this person as myself)
    J.  Am I being tenderhearted? (easily moved to love, pity, or sorrow)
    K. Am I being forgiving? (pardoning without exacting a penalty)

Proverbs 10:32 “The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: (follow that still small voice) but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.”

How to Wear Your Hat – with Responsibility

Choose ~ Possess ~ Exercise ~ Influence ~ Rule
(Wisely ~ Your Strength & Abilities ~ Others in Godliness ~ Yourself first, then your affairs)

I.    WEAR YOUR POWER AS A PROPER CHILD OF GOD.
To be a proper child of God you must first be saved, baptized, a member of a local church and obedient to God’s Word.

    1.    CHOOSE Jesus Christ as your Saviour for now and eternity.  “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”  (Romans 6:23)
    2.    POSSESS and EXERCISE freedom from sin.  “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (Jn 8:36) “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (I Jn 1:9)
    3.    INFLUENCE others by godly example.  “But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: …”
    4.    RULE yourself and all your lifetime of affairs from the Bible.

Godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.  This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.  (I Timothy 4:8)

 II. WEAR YOUR POWER AS A DAUGHTER.

    1.    CHOOSE obedience to God and your parents and your elders.  “Children, obey your parents in the Lord:  for this is right.”  (Ephesians 6:1)
    2.    POSSESS and EXERCISE your physical and mental abilities in the paths taught to you by your mother and father.  Follow in daily routines no matter how boring!  Habits formed bring ease.  Lessons of life are learned by watching and doing.
    3.    INFLUENCE your parents, siblings, and other family members in your home by a godly example of obedience.  Be a joy!
    4.    RULE yourself with diligence in learning and practicing all your affairs using love, kindness and faithfulness.

“…that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:  Happy is that people that is in such a case:  yea, happy is the people whose God is the Lord.  (Psalm 144: 12b, 15)

III.  WEAR YOUR POWER AS A MOTHER.
    1.     CHOOSE to love your children! Love them when they are unlovely, love them when it’s hard to do.  Love them when it means disciplining them.  Love them just because.
    2.    POSSESS and EXERCISE your authority over your children.
    3.    INFLUENCE your children both by a living example and by teaching and enforcing what has been taught.  (nurture & admonition)
    4.    RULE by decision and with management of time, resources, and with love and diligence.
“He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children.  Praise ye the Lord.” (Psalm 113:9)

 IV.  WEAR YOUR POWER AS A FRIEND.
    1.    CHOOSE first and foremost to be the friend of God.
    2.    POSSESS and EXERCISE the physical and mental abilities (use your head!) that God has given you to remain loyal, first of all, to your greatest         friend. “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly:  and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24) The Lord,         of course!  Then, you will know how to be loyal to others.
    3.    INFLUENCE your friends from the words of God and with godly principles.  “A friend loveth at all times…” (Proverbs 17:17).  Not just when         it is convenient.  “A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer seperateth chief friends.” (Proverbs 16:28)
    4.    RULE yourself in any friendship (not your friend) by management of the time and resources you have available, thereby managing your affairs to         be God honoring.  Rule yourself with the authority that God has given you to remain pure.  Don’t sully yourself!  Do you trust God??  Then                 behave that way!

“…Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness:  and he was called the Friend of God.” (James 2:23)

V. WEAR YOUR POWER AS A WIFE.

    1.    CHOOSE proper submission to your husband.  Choose that veil of propriety, the quality or state of being proper, suitable, compatible, able,         qualified, virtuous, pure, modest, and EXCELLENT.   God declares, “…the woman is the glory of the man.” (I Cor 11:7)  Therefore, ought we to         have power on our heads!  How much more honor do you want?  How much more honor can you handle?  Choose to love your husband!  Choose     to love your children!
    2.    POSSESS and EXERCISE that mental and physical ability endued you by God to love and serve your husband by administrative decisions in         the home and management of domestic affairs.
    3.    INFLUENCE the family members in your home by your example and principled behaviour directed by the words of God.
    4.    RULE!  “Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.”  (Ephesians 5:24)

You have an influence on everyone in your life.  Has not God placed you in a magnificent position to be a godly example?  The powers he has endued you with lie within you to possess and exercise to influence your whole lifetime, and that of others, for good.  Your parents, husband, children, and friends are all affected by your choices of how you use your power endued by God.  Ladies young and old, single and married all have this responsibility to God, to others and to yourselves to have power on your head in order that you might be the proper child of God, as a daughter, mother, friend and wife who pleases and honors God.

“Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands:  that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; while they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.  Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of the plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.  For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:  even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord:  whose daughters ye are, as long as you do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.” (I Peter 3:1-6
