Greetings from Argentina
     October 2009

We have been back in Argentina for a month now. We are excited at what God is doing. God has been blessing tremendously in the beginning of the new work in Quilmes. From June to October, God has enabled Pastor Javier Bravo to enter into six families and gain their confidence as he has answered their questions about what the Bible says about different things. During that time three ladies made professions of salvation, Estela, her daughter Sabrina, and Roxana. These last weeks as we have been visiting the families, they have been asking when they could meet for a Bible study. This coming Saturday, we will be meeting in the house of Roque and Saida to begin a Bible study in the Gospel of John. An hour before this meeting we will be having a time of games and Bible teaching for the children. We are expecting between 20-30 children. We ask your prayers for this beginning. Hector and Estela Milon will accompany Gail and me as we work with the Bravo family in sharing the Gospel with these families.

The other news for which we request your prayers is concerning our housing situation. We need to find a new house by December 31 as our contract expires and our landlords want to return to this house. We have been diligently looking this month that we have been home. We have been looking in the area where we believe God would have us to begin our new work. Because of the economic climate here, some things have become the norm rather than the exception. To rent a house we need someone who has a clear title to their house who will allow us to use that title as a guarantee. We also need to show a salary receipt. These are not obstacles to our Great God, but do need your prayers on our behalf. Also the rents have increased dramatically. These past seven and a half years we have rented for between 300-400 dollars a month. We have had no water bill because in Don Torcuato every house has its own well. The municipal tax has been about 10 dollars a month. What we are now facing are rents for similar housing that is between 800-1200 dollars a month, a city water bill of about 15 dollars a month and a municipal tax of between 60-80 dollars a month. This puts a strain on our budget. We ask your prayers that God will provide the house for us that will enable us to effectively begin the new work, at a price that is within our budget.

We would also ask that you pray that God would supply a house for Hector and Estela Milon. They have the same need we do for someone to allow them to use the title as a guarantee.

January 2009

Greetings from Argentina,

We have been having some of the hottest weather on record for this time of year. We miss the cooler even frigid temperatures some of you are enjoying or enduring right now, depending on
your point of view.  Concerning the work here in Argentina, we are in a transition period. We have finished the work here in Don Torcuato. We are working with La Iglesia Bautista Calvario located in the city of San Andres. The goal is to strengthen the church in San Andres and help them plant a church in one of the neighboring cities. We are looking at the city of Tigre. We are looking for housing in this area right now and praying that God will provide the house which will enable us to effectively minister in this area.

The other work God has opened up here in Argentina is that of working with national pastors to understand the importance of discipleship in establishing new believers in their walk with God and the formation of new leadership for the existing church and for the planting of new churches. This has expanded by word of mouth to include pastors and churches in Peru, Colombia, Paraguay and Bolivia. I make one or two trips a year to meet with these pastors. In the meeting, I challenge them to keep their focus on a biblical vision. God wants them to fulfill the Great Commission not only where they minister but they also need to be involved in planting churches in other areas.  Thus the focus is not just on their own church growing and the leadership
needed for that but also the need for them to train leadership to go from their church and plant other churches.

The trip to Colombia in November enabled me to speak with pastors from Peru, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico as well as Columbia. The topic was the recognition and
formation of leadership in the local church.  On January 5-15, I was in Peru speaking to pastors and leaders of churches in the north in the city of Sullana. There were about 40 pastors
in attendance. The topics were things that hinder pastors from forming leaders and things that hinder the church from accomplishing the Great Commission. The pastors were from all age groups and all economic and social levels. There were young men desiring to enter the ministry and men who have been in the ministry 40 years and everything in between.  Their love and desire to serve God was a great encouragement to me.  I also met in Lima with another group of pastors to discuss the formation and support of national missionaries to plant churches
outside of Peru.We also had discussions on how to help and encourage the churches to carry out the Great Commission.

God has opened the door for Gail to disciple different women. Through this there is the possibility of a women’s Bible study with women who want to know how God wants them to glorify Him as wives, mothers and neighbors.

We praise God that Vicente a young man in high school trusted Christ as his Savior at the youth meeting this month.

We also had the opportunity to attend the anniversary of a church that a couple we discipled was instrumental in starting. That was a blessing and encouragement.

We are planning on coming back for furlough May through July to visit supporting churches that we have not been to in four or five years.

We are also looking forward to the birth of our first grandchild sometime towards the end of June.  We are thankful for Heidi and Jon and would appreciate your prayers for them during this time as well.
