Psalm 116
In Psalm 116:1, the Psalmist said, “I love the LORD,” declaring his
continuous or everlasting love for the LORD. This love he declared
for several reasons. First, he said, “because the LORD heard my
voice” or my sound. It teaches us that the great self-existing God, the
creator of all, is interested in us and listens for our voice or personal
sound.
Secondly, The Psalmist shares why he loves the LORD when he says,
“because the LORD heard my supplications.” Now, our
supplications are our personal prayer requests or entreaties either for
ourselves or for others. It teaches us how much the LORD is
interested in our prayer requests for our needs and the needs of
others. With this, the Psalmist says, “I will call upon Him as long as I
live” (v.2).
Thirdly, the Psalmist recalls that when he realized the hold that death
and hell had upon him that he called upon the LORD “to deliver
him” (vs.3-4). It reminds us of the biblical promise in Romans 10:13,
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
For this deliverance the Psalmist declares the Lord is “gracious,
righteous and merciful” (v.5).
Fourthly, the Psalmist acknowledges that it is the LORD and His
ability that preserveth or guards the simple and helps the humble
(v.6), and it is the LORD that deals or recompenses bountifully or
adequately with him (v.7).
Final, the Psalmist declares, “For thou hast delivered my soul from
death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling” (v.8).
The Psalmist recognizes the personal salvation of his soul is by the
LORD, his new found joy is from the LORD and his new walk in life
is of the Lord.
In conclusion, The Psalmist teaches us that anyone who is saved can
make the same declarative statement with all of his heart: “I love the
LORD.” They are able to do this because these experiences and
reasons are true for them as well. Can you truly say with all your
heart? “I love the LORD!” - CAR
